How to Prepare for a Conference-Style Presentation
From TED Talks to webinars, keynote addresses to all-firm meetings, conference-style presentations are abundant in the modern workplace. While this genre of presentation is engaging, it requires intense and intentional preparation. With a limited window of time and audience engagement, preparation for conference-style presentations will benefit from these three practices:
1. Print Out Your Slides
This not only allows you to layout the entirety of your presentation, but is also a great tool to help cut down content if you are worried about going over your time limit. Organize your slides by point, in the order you plan to present them, and see if any slides or concepts are unnecessary for the overarching goal of your presentation.
2. Clarify, clarify, clarify
After preparing your content for days, weeks, and even months on end, it can feel natural to rush through the concepts you have become so familiar with. It is important to remember that you are presenting new information to your audience members, and that you taking the time to slowly and clearly explain your concepts will determine how engaged they are with your material.
3. Prepare an Alternate Ending
Life happens, and as you present, you might find yourself at the end of your time limit and only through half your slides. To handle this possibility smoothly, prepare an alternate ending for the middle of your presentation; this will allow you to wrap up your topic and provide a few last tidbits of information before you leave the stage.
