3 Tell-Tale Signs of a Newbie Presentor

Whether you're pitching a product idea Venture Capitalists or weekend plans to your friends, no one wants to come across as inexperienced. Luckily, there are a few tell-tale presentation habits that out any speaker as a newbie. Read up on these three deadly sins, as well as how to eliminate them from your presentation tool kit.

1. Forgetting Your Audience

We're assuming that information that is relevant to your boss is different from information that you would share with your best friend. In order to successfully present to an audience, you have to know your audience. Avoid boring your listeners time by refining your presentation to information that is not only applicable to them, but interests them.

2. Reading Off Slides

Presentation slides should serve as a visual aide to the presentation, rather than the presentation itself. Avoid reading to our audience what they can read for themselves, and use your slides as keywords to develop your presentation off of. Being dependent on slides sets you up for a presentation disaster should your technology fail. Familiarize yourself with your content so that should your visuals be inconsistent, the show can go on.

3. Unconfident Body Language

Lack of eye contact, poor posture, and closed arms send a strong message of insecurity to your audience before you say a word. Practice your presentation in front of a mirror, some friends, or a camera to observe and adjust your body language until it looks as confident as you want to feel.
